How to Sync VIP Tier Tags to Shopify

Learn how CWILL Loyalty creates and syncs VIP tier tags to Shopify, and how you can use them.

VIP tier tags keep a customer’s current CWILL Loyalty tier synchronized with Shopify customer tags. When you create a VIP tier, CWILL Loyalty automatically creates a default tag for it using the cwl_ prefix. For example, the Gold tier has the default tag cwl_gold.

You can keep the default tag or replace it with your own tag before enabling synchronization.

How It Works

  • Each VIP tier has its own Shopify customer tag.

  • When a customer enters a tier, CWILL Loyalty adds that tier’s tag to the customer in Shopify.

  • When the customer moves to another tier, the previous VIP tag is replaced with the new tier tag.

  • Tag syncing works from CWILL Loyalty to Shopify.

Note: Adding a VIP tag manually in Shopify does not assign or change the customer’s VIP tier in CWILL Loyalty.

What You Can Do with VIP Tags

Once VIP tags are available in Shopify, you can use them to:

  • Filter customers or create customer segments by VIP tier.

  • Create tier-specific workflows in Shopify Flow.

  • Send targeted campaigns through marketing apps that support Shopify customer tags.

  • Create VIP-only discounts or promotions through compatible discount apps.

  • Help your support team quickly identify a customer’s current VIP tier.

For example, you can create a Shopify customer segment for customers tagged with cwl_gold, then use that segment for a Gold-member campaign.

How to Set Up

1. In CWILL Loyalty, go to Program > VIP.

2. Open the VIP tags card.

3. Review the default tag created for each VIP tier. Edit a tag if needed.

4. Turn on Auto syncing, then save your changes.

After auto syncing is enabled, the VIP tags card shows the latest sync status. The first sync may take some time if your store has many customers.

Verify the Tag in Shopify

1. In Shopify admin, go to Customers.

2. Open a customer who is in a VIP tier.

3. Confirm that the matching VIP tag appears in the customer’s Tags section.

For example, a customer in the Gold tier should have the cwl_gold tag.
